This piece is significant to me and my favourite piece of The Human Odyssey. Spectra was created to be part of the dialogue that movement for social progress is current, timeless, and global. She stands for the human right to exist and be embraced in a spectrum of humanity. To me, she has both a 1970’s and a contemporary vibe, because we as people are still fighting for love, peace, and representation. I see her as such a strong, beautiful, vibrant character. Our world sometimes still feels divided, as though the very spectrum of our humanity is polarised to black&white. This painting acknowledges the struggle for acceptance is real. But her horns represent the strength that people are unstoppable, and will fight back. And that like holding back a rainbow, it’s impossible to repress the full gamut of colours in the human spirit from shining through. There is light, and love in all of us, and we will stand together and while our voices shine.
