NAOTO ATTORI & MARK ELLIOTT: The Magic Caravan : Dorothy Circus Rome | Double Solo Show

28 Apr - 31 May 2011
With the exhibition “The Magic Caravan” Dorothy Circus Gallery will bring its visitors in the magic spiral of the circus colours. This theme has always been a key point for the gallery: the circus is the world in which reality transforms itself, where imagination, games, and the enchantment produced by the meeting of colours and music combine with the most grotesque and cruel aspects of life.

From April 28th to June 1st, the gallery will present two solo shows by the most eclectic artists on the Pop Surrealist scene: Mark Elliot from the United States, and Japanese Naoto Hattori.

The artists will propose a trip to their own circus.

Elliott paints on the basis of photographic technique. He renders the full flavor of an era that marked the destiny of humanity and America, the 30’s more specifically.

Elliott likes painting scenes of everyday life, where the arcane and the absurd that interweaves the relationships between men and, in general, the existence, are embodied by details and mostly by funny animal creatures – such as frogs and amphibians. They create an ironic contrast between the realism of the painting technique and a surreal imagery, and, in the game of representation, reflect a deeper truth.

Naoto Hattori, the artist of the bizarre, reminds in a pop Surrealist way of Bosh and Arcimboldo. Fantastic creatures, animals and a world observed by thousands of eyes unveils the secret of a reality that is impossible to define, and subject to a constant and fluid metamorphosis in which the eye is both author and witness.
