“The painting is about the way our roles as parents
change as children grow up. As they grow stronger they
need less and less from us. It is a bittersweet emotion.
It is of course wonderful to see them become strong and
independent, but our importance for them diminishes. At
some point the child will be too big to pick up, and will no
longer want our protection and comfort. A Mother will ask
herself: Is this the last time I will ever pick up my son?.”
