“Pagan Madonna" is a different take on the Christian
image of the Madonna and Child. In the traditional
iconography, a male child is held by an obedient female
servant of a male God. In my version, a female
child is “held” by Mother Earth herself. The moon
floating in the clouds serves to symbolize the face of
the Great Mother. The child points to her heart with
one hand and gestures towards Earth with the other.
This painting reflects my heartfelt conviction that, if
the human race is to survive, patriarchal monotheism
must give way to a new kind of spirituality, one
which honors the Divine Feminine and recognizes
our sacred connection to Nature and to the Earth.”
