Petting a Rabbit offers a visual dialogue between humans and the natural world, captured through an intriguing and somewhat uneasy dynamic. The vibrant yet mismatched color palette—a mix of soft pastels and fluorescent tones—echoes the dissonance the artist describes in the relationship between humans and animals.

The scene suggests a fragile balance: the human figure, clad in modern, almost caricature-like athletic wear, bends awkwardly in a gesture of connection with the rabbit. The animal, a symbol of nature’s innocence, appears simultaneously at ease and vulnerable.

In his own words, Viner acknowledges humanity’s duality: “we are both domesticated and atavistic, striving to control the natural world while grappling with our primal instincts”

This tension is intensified in the painting through its playful, yet slightly unsettling composition as Viner creates a sharp contrast between the human figure’s artificiality and the patch of untamed wildflowers the rabbit is nestled in.

In this painting, the act of ‘petting’ becomes a metaphor for humanity’s often misguided attempts to tame and sentimentalise a world that is neither harmonious nor controllable. Viner invites us to question the absurdity of this pursuit and to confront the complexity of our place within the natural order.
